Inspection of racking systems

Testing in accordance with DIN EN 15635, DGUV rule 108-007

DIN EN 15635 covers the specified intervals for rack inspections and also describes how any damage found is to be rectified. In the case of shelving structures, this damage should primarily be rectified using original parts.</p

Shelving can become an uncontrollable danger in operation if damaged, causing both personal injury and damage to property. Annual testing of these systems is therefore essential and is also required by law.

Shelves subject to mandatory testing include:

  • Pallet racks
  • Cantilever racking
  • Shelf racking
  • Retractable shelving
  • Continuous flow racking

Shelving equipment is subject to the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health and must undergo a monthly visual inspection and be inspected by qualified personnel every 12 months. While the visual inspection can be carried out by the company itself, the 12-monthly rack inspection may only be carried out by certified DGUV inspection technicians, in accordance with DIN EN 15635, BetrSichV § 10, BGR 234

WEMAG GmbH & Co. KG offers you professional rack inspections, rack inspections and storage facility inspections including complete documentation. Thanks to our work, you can increase and maintain operational safety in your company and thus minimize the risk of defects and failures

Inspection of ladders, steps and mobile scaffolding

The DGUV Information 208-016 is an instruction manual for the correct use of ladders and steps.

These must be subjected to a test by an expert. The test period for these products depends on the operating conditions, e.g. how often the ladders and steps are used or stressed in the company. The severity and frequency of defects in previous tests also play a role in determining the test interval. In general, ladders and steps must be inspected at least once a year, as hazards are often underestimated when working on ladders, steps and mobile scaffolding. Thousands of accidents involving access equipment occur every year.

The most important regulations are summarized in the German Ordinance on Industrial Safety and Health (BetrSichV) and the instructions for handling ladders and steps „DGUV Information 208-016“ and „DGUV Information 201-011“ for handling work and protective equipment. These regulations require every company to inspect ladders, steps and mobile scaffolding regularly to ensure that they are in proper condition.</p

Inspection of hoists and lifting gear

Inspection in accordance with DGUV V54 and DGUV Rule 109-017

The accident prevention regulations for winches, lifting and towing equipment, as well as the regulations for testing the equipment, are summarized in DGUV regulation 54.

Hoisting equipment

According to DGUV V54, winches, lifting and pulling equipment must be inspected by an expert at least once a year.

Load-carrying equipment

DGUV Rule 100-500 deals with the operation of and work on or with various work equipment. This includes the following products:

  • Round slings/round sling gear
  • Wire ropes/wire rope slings
  • Lifting slings/lifting strap slings
  • Sling chains (visual inspection at least every 12 months, crack detection at least every 36 months)

What responsibility do entrepreneurs/operators bear?

Other influences can cause damage to work equipment, which can lead to dangerous situations when using the work equipment concerned. The following influences, among others, can cause damage to work equipment:

  • Signs of fatigue due to ageing
  • Long periods of non-use
  • Weathering (e.g. UV radiation, which leads to brittleness of plastics)
  • Pollution
  • Corrosion, etc.

As the external conditions cannot always be influenced, the BetrSichV requires the operator to have the work equipment inspected at regular intervals. According to §3Abs.3 BetrSichV, the regular inspections and deadlines must be adhered to. The work equipment test must be carried out by an expert (if necessary, an expert in accordance with Section 10 (2) BetrSichV)
